On the GallantFew: For Veterans, By Veterans

This month I want to bring your attention to veterans. This subject is near and dear to my heart because I am a veteran. In fact, my wife and I have two sons that are veterans and looking back into our family trees we have served in every war since the American Revolution.

On the GallantFew: For Veterans, By Veterans I have a wall in my shop that I have dedicated to the veterans in our family. Grandfathers, fathers, uncles, and cousins have all answered the call to protect this great nation. November 11th honors all veterans who have agreed to give their life for the United States.

November is also Give Back month, and I want to highlight one of those organizations that truly give back. Making the transition to civilian life is difficult. Those who haven’t served don’t understand the transformation that takes place when a service member leaves active duty.

Background and Programs

The GallantFew is dedicated to helping veterans transition from military life to civilian life. This group was started by veterans wanting to help their brothers & sisters in arms get a better start in the civilian world. There are many organizations that help vets transition, but the GallantFew provides one-on-one assistance. One of the ways they assist vets is to provide VetSTAR coaching. VetSTAR is one-on-one coaching aimed at providing an intentional plan of hope and purpose. They state their objectives for coaching are:

  • Emotional – Person growth mindset with a sound emotional state
  • Physical – Healthy and fit lifestyle
  • Spiritual – A life of purpose and dedication
  • Professional – A fulfilling career, education and financial growth
  • Social – Integration and leadership in civilian communities.

They have 2 two-hour sessions that help the veterans get on track. Once you have completed your sessions you can contact your coach anytime with follow-up questions.

Transitioning to civilian life is difficult because of the stark contrast of structure, community, routine, and identity.  One way the GallantFew seeks to solve this issue is by offering the STAR Program 1:1 Mentorship. This program provides specific support for the veteran by providing accountability and structure.

One aspect of any military branch is the requirement for physical activity. The GallantFew offers a program called VetRec. The VetRec combines fitness, camaraderie, and community. Often vets struggle with weight gain, lack of friends, and not having a structured routine. This program is geared to get the vets up and active.

One event that has been successful for vets to network together is the VetXpo. This allows the veterans to network with other veterans to talk about their journey and to give support as well as receive it. Likewise, the Brigade V is a team that gets together, collaborates, and shares success stories as well as military-oriented employee resources. They utilize businesses and corporations from around the world.

Another great program for veterans to get involved in is the Patriot Challenge. Every February civilians and military partners raise funds and awareness for the GallantFew’s mission. Some of the fantastic civilian business partners include Morgan Stanley, USAA Insurance, Shell USA, Inc., and Behr Paint Company.

Donations and Giving Back

In addition to programs, there are multiple events that are designed to give back. One of those is the Texas Denim and Diamonds Gala. Last year, $72,000 dollars were raised in this event alone. All of the funds are being used to help vets. There are concerts and other events throughout the year, all over the country.

Some of the ways that you can get involved is by being a civilian volunteer at one of their events. Another way is by donating online to their mission. Some of these donations qualify for a “Double your Donation.” It’s a great way to take advantage of generous employers. Another option is to participate in Amazon Smile. Amazon will donate .5% of your eligible purchases to GallantFew. There is also the Round Up app, this allows you to round up your purchases and sends a deposit directly to GallantFew.

The GallantFew has done a remarkable job of listening to Vets and providing solutions to meet their needs. More vets are entering the workforce each day. Many of these vets have seen combat and deal with the trauma it causes. Helping these men and women transition to civilian life successfully is the goal of the GallantFew. I wish that the GallantFew had been there when I left the Marines. Many of us left the service wondering what to do next. If you are a vet or a civilian wanting to get involved take the first step with GallantFew.
