John Deems, MGS Graduate

“I am presently employed as a civilian test pilot, since retiring as one from the USAF, as I reach true retirement in the next few years, I hope to open up and operate a gunsmithing shop on my terms.”

I retired from the military about 12 years ago and knew my VA education benefits were soon going to expire. Since I have gotten back into the shooting sports over the last few years, my interest in firearms has rekindled strong.

Military Benefits FAQs

At MGS, we proudly offer accredited, quality gunsmithing programs to military members, veterans, and their families. There are several reasons why military servicemen and women find our courses appealing: our gun repair courses align well with the benefits you have earned, your interest in firearms, and our flexible scheduling which allows you to study when and where it suits you!

Your eligibility amount is determined by your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Benefits can only be applied to our Advanced Gunsmithing courses.

  • Complete the MGS online enrollment form here

  • From there, you will work with our VA Representatives to complete the process using your benefits as tuition
  • Please note there is a 10-day VA-mandated waiting period once you’ve enrolled

Once you’ve enrolled, there is a 10 day waiting period for your benefits to be approved. You will be notified via email that you can get started with your studies once the waiting period is lifted!

While students have up to two years to complete their coursework, the average completion time is 16-18 months.

The short answer is no. MGS’s Advanced Gunsmithing course is approved by the VA as correspondence. Therefore, MGS students are not eligible for a housing stipend.

You will be responsible to pay for the rest of the course if your benefits expire before you complete the course.

Yes. The Department of Defense (DoD) is authorized to allow individuals who, on or after August 1, 2009, have served at least 6 years in the Armed Forces and who agree to serve at least another 4 years in the Armed Forces to transfer unused entitlement to their Spouse. The Department of Defense may, by regulation, impose additional eligibility requirements and limit the number of months transferable to not less than 18 months. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Public Health System (PHS) personnel are also eligible to transfer their entitlement to eligible dependents.

NOTE: The ability to transfer benefits is limited to those currently serving in the military.
